October 2009 Constellation

Hello, Everyone!

October is a month I usually associate with rapid change.  The shortsleeve days are farther apart, and we even see an occasional snowflake.  The events begin to change as well, as we compensate for Mother Nature’s whims.

Early this month we will try to enjoy a bit of ice cream one last time before it freezes.  That delight is followed directly by a hike at Ganondagan, which has plenty of flora and fauna to complement the historical aspects of the site.  Thanks to Sue and John for planning out this day.

Later in the month we have the national Mensa Testing Day, which always brings us new offers of membership.  It’s always nice to have a variety of Mensans available to talk to the prospects about the benefits of membership, along with helping Bob and Eric with the test materials.   Talk to either about joining in the process.

The two new restaurants we tried in September were well attended, and offer possibilities for future events.  Please give me some feedback on your experiences there, to know if we should keep them on the list.  I personally enjoyed the Mariachi band at Rio Tomatlan, a last minute surprise that worked out quite well.

I just looked back at last October’s issue, and discovered that Kristin has been newsletter editor for over a year now.  Congratulations for dealing with all of the issues in stride!

Have a great month.

See you at an event!

Calling all questions! The AMC now has a FAQ document on its web site and wants to include your questions about the AMC and its functioning, the whys and how comes, and provide the answers. Please send your questions to me and I’ll forward them on for answers and inclusion.

I’m still traveling and dining! I had dinner with Maumee Valley Mensans again in August (so close to home that it just might become a regular thing for me). I attended East Central Ohio Mensa’s picnic on August 22nd and Mid-Michigan Mensa’s 35th anniversary celebration picnic on August 23rd. On August 26th, 54 Mensans from Southeast Michigan Mensa, Mid-Michigan Mensa and Maumee Valley Mensa met for dinner at a Chinese buffet, in Howell, MI, at an event we affectionately call “Meet in the Middle” because it is! On August 29th I saw many Ms at a birthday party in Cincinnati, too. My introvert is slowly becoming an extrovert. Thank you all for making me feel so welcome.

Between writing these paragraphs, I am packing for another trip to Rochester, NY. I might have visited Cleveland Area Mensa on September 24th (that’s what we get for information delay in this instant world). I’ve been invited to speak at a monthly gathering of Kentuckiana Mensa and will do that on my way to or from Florida this winter. Visits to Bluegrass Mensa and Vandalia Mensa will be planned soon, too.

In fulfillment of my longstanding commitment to S.I.G.H.T., I was able to play hostess on two different occasions to Region 3 Ms traveling to Ypsilanti; call if you need a place to stay – I might be able to help.

I will be attending the AMC meeting October 23-25 in Arlington, TX. The agenda for that meeting should be on the Inside AML web site in mid-September. Let me know if you have concerns.

LLAP and Peace,
Betsy Yvonne Mark

Good Wine Cheap
(and good food to go with it)
By John Grover

A few years ago, my domestic supervisor and I took an extended vacation to the Southern United States.  One of the highlights was our visit to Savannah, Georgia.  Savannah is a city replete with history, architecture, charm and very good food. The recipe this month is from a delightful restaurant called “Lady and Sons”.  This restaurant is the home of gourmet Southern comfort food.  And, the proprietor, Paula Deen, can be seen on the Food Network.

This month’s wine is from Barefoot Cellars, based in Sonoma County, California.  Their non-vintage (a blend from more than one year and often more than one area) Chardonnay is a delightful example of a very good affordable wine.  This wine, while down right cheap, does not exhibit the faults of the many inexpensive Chardonnays on the market today (read faults as insipid, flabby, cloying and way too much oak).  Barefoot Cellars has produced a Chardonnay that is bright, crisp and with the taste of fresh apples and peaches.  It is a real steal at about $7 a bottle and goes well with a cream sauce such as the following.

Veal and Creamed Spinach (from the Savannah Country Cookbook by Paula H. Deen)

Ingredients:
  • 4 to 6 veal scallopini
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 tsp. House Seasoning (see below)
  • 1 sleeve of Ritz crackers, crushed
  • 3 tbsp. olive oil
  • half cup white wine
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 bunch fresh spinach trimmed and cleaned
  • quarter cup cream
  • salt and pepper to taste.
(The House Seasoning is 4 parts salt, 1 part pepper and 1 part garlic powder.  The Boss keeps a salt shaker full of it by the stove.)

Between sheets of wax paper, pound veal into quarter inch thick slices.  Beat egg adding House Seasoning.  Dip veal in egg, and then dip into Ritz cracker crumbs.  Sauté the veal in heated oil for about 2 minutes on each side, over medium heat.  Pour wine into pan and cook for another minute or two.  Remove veal.  Add chopped onion and fresh spinach to pan and sauté until spinach is done, 2 or 3 minutes (don’t overcook).  Add cream and continue to sauté for 1 more minute or until hot.  Season to taste with salt and pepper.  Place on platter with veal on top of the spinach.  The cookbook suggests that if you want to cut back on calories, not to add the cream.  But, I say go for it.

I hope that you will contact me with your comments and favorite wines at .  I will be happy to share them with the broader Mensa group.
