June 2009 Constellation

[ LocSec | Region 3 | Members | Events | Calendar | Mensa Select | Kids ]

Hello, Everyone!

Congratulations to Katharine Burke on winning a Karen Cooper Memorial Scholarship award in the Mensa Foundation Scholarship essay contest.  Great job!  Steve Lindsey also deserves our thanks for chairing the local scholarship program.

Congratulations also to Betsy Mark from Ypsilanti, Michigan, who will become our new RVC (Regional Vice Chairman) on July first.   She will be in the area during the first week of July, and we are planning a dinner at that time so she can meet with the group.   Watch for more info in the next issue.

The LocSec of Southern Idaho Mensa, Harold Ward, will be staying in this area before and after the AG in July.  He is interested in carpooling to the AG if possible.  Anyone interested in contacting him in regard to that can reach him at 208-724-5740.

Thanks to Sue and John for hosting the “Ice Cream and Hike” event in May.   High quality was enjoyed both in the desserts and the landscape.  The Department of Environmental Conservation in East Avon has a rather nice network of trails with a good complement of wildlife.  This month Sue and John will host the “Dinner and Fireflies” event in Victor.

The Constellation will have a combined July and August issue.  If you have an event that you would like to see happen in that timeframe, please contact Kristin or myself with details by June 15.

See you at an event!

RVC3 as of July 1

Thank you Dave Swanka for representing Region 3 as RVC for the past three years.  Your service to the Region is greatly appreciated.

It’s May and I am taking the liberty of writing this July column because I can, even though I will not officially be your RVC until July 1.  I am proud to represent the greatest region in the United States and I do intend to serve this Region to the very best of my ability.  I promise that I will never again tell you when it is that I am writing my column.  Suffice it to say that it will always be at least a month before the month it appears in your newsletter.  Of course, that presumes that there is room in your newsletter for its inclusion.

I have begun this column while sitting at a restaurant in Battle Creek, Michigan, waiting to have dinner with some Western Michigan Mensans as I travel to the western side of the state to visit friends.  In June, I will be having dinner in Traverse City, Michigan, with Northern Michigan Ms.  I hope to be able to visit with each local group soon.  Many of my visits will be to RGs or in conjunction with some personal trip that I will be taking.  I’ll let you know where I will be via this column so that you can be there, too.  I do hope to meet as many Region 3 Ms as I can.  In that regard, I will be hosting a Meet and Greet at the AMFM AG in Pittsburgh on Friday, July 3, at 10:30 in the morning.  I’ll be at the AMC and ABM meetings, hanging around the Action Desk and various other places during that AG, too.  Do stop by to say hi.  (Dinner was great!)

As my first official RVC visit(s), I hope to have dinner with Western New York Ms and Rochester Area Ms, either together or separately, immediately following the AMFM AG in Pittsburgh on my way to Southeast Michigan’s and my southern and your northern border Canadian AG being held in Ottawa July 10-12.  And I will be attending Columbus’ RG, Mind, Body and Soul, July 31 through August 2.  Hope to see you there!

Misty Richmond of Cincinnati Area Mensa has done a fabulous job maintaining the Region 3 website and I am delighted to report that she has agreed to continue doing so.  I hope you avail yourself of her efforts by visiting http://www.region3.us.mensa.org/.

Misty has created two e-lists for Region 3 members.  One is a Facebook group -- Region 3 - American Mensa – http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=71515809887.  The other is a Yahoo group – AMR3.Region 3 American Mensa – http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AMR3/.  De Freshwater of Cleveland Area Mensa will be assisting Misty with the duties of confirming membership in and moderating these two groups.  I hope that you will use them to keep in touch with each other and to share ideas with each other and with me.

I will be posting my monthly column on all three sites in case your editor can’t find room to print it in its entirety or needs to edit it.

I have recently completed an online mediation training class.  I hope I never have to use the skills and knowledge I have gained from the class, but I am here to assist you if you need me.  In that regard, I hope all Region 3 groups have an ombudsman or mediator.  Insurance seems to be the best policy against travesty; no umbrella – rain; umbrella – no rain; ombudsman/mediator – no problems.

If you need to reach me, I can be e-mailed at or ; be sure to use Region 3 in the subject line of any e-mail.  My address is 3674 Oak Drive, Ypsilanti, MI 48197, my home phone number is 734-434-5757 and my cell phone number is 313-530-2055.  If you get my voice mail, be sure to let me know when it is best for me to return your call.

LLAP and Peace,
Betsy

JULY 1 — JULY 5TH  AG IN PITTSBURGH, PA

Thursday, July 2nd @ 7:00 PM, “First Thirstday” at Castaways, 244 Lake Rd. Webster (take Bay Rd. north to Lake Rd., make a left on Lake Rd. and Castaways is about ½ mile down on the right), 323-2943.  Castaways is one of our favorite summer weather stops with good food and potential for a breath taking sunset over the lake from their deck. Note: You may want to bring a sweater or light jacket; we hope to sit outside on their deck, space & weather permitting.

Note: In the unlikely event there is a problem with our reservation when we arrive, we may need to make a decision to move to another venue on the spot. We will wait a half hour before moving to allow for late arrivals, so try not to arrive later than this so you know where we are in the event of a move.

Hey Kids!

Pirate

This pirate was walking around with a paper towel on his head instead of a hat.  So I said to him, “Dude, where's your hat?”
“Arr, I got a Bounty on me head.”

Think you can do better? Mensa's Gifted Children's Program is publishing a new magazine for Mensa Kids and we need you--your jokes, your stories, your ideas. Send questions, stories, poems, essays, trivia or reviews of books, movies, games to for possible inclusion in our new magazine, just for Mensa kids!?

Even if you are not an author, you can participate in our first issue by helping us pick a name for the new magazine. Visit Max's blog at mensaforkids.org to suggest a name or vote for someone else's. The winning name will be revealed at the Annual Gathering in Pittsburgh when the first issue comes out!
